Colleges and Universities on YouTube

2019 YouTube University Rankings

This EduListing page provides some information on the adoption of the social platform YouTube among higher education institutions and leads to the most comprehensive list of Universities and Colleges with an official presence on YouTube. The list is arranged alphabetically by country name and then ranked by total number of subscribers. YouTube data/rankings are extracted and published twice a year and the current first edition is based on data extracted in October 2019.

1) EduListing YouTube Adoption Rate

Currently an estimated 8,153 out of a total of 13,619 higher education institutions included in the EduListing database have adopted an official institutional YouTube page. The estimated number of Universities adopting a YouTube page has been calculated by identifying institutional YouTube pages through two methods:

  • direct submission from Universities
  • search of YouTube page/channel links publicly published in the Universities' websites
For this reason the above number and the EduListing YouTube Adoption Rate below could be underestimated if Universities have not submitted a YouTube page to us and/or if they do not publicly publish a link to their official YouTube page/channel in their institutional website.

  Oct 2018 May 2019 Oct 2019

2) Popularity and Engagement factors

University YouTube pages reach different levels of adoption, popularity and engagement depending on various factors including:

Micro Factors

  • the University's reputation and size
  • the University's overall level of online presence, web popularity and distance education adoption rate
  • the University's level of adoption and use of YouTube as an additional channel to the institutional website
Macro Factors
  • the Country's Tertiary Education size
  • the Country's level of Internet usage and connection speeds
  • the Country's level of adoption and use of YouTube as a social media platform

3) YouTube University Rankings aim and methodology

Some large Universities have adopted multiple YouTube pages associated, for example, to each Faculty and/or to each administrative area (i.e. Admissions, Marketing and Communications, Alumni, etc.). EduListing has chosen the most general institutional YouTube page for each University in order to publish its EduListing YouTube University Ranking for each country and for the top 200 Universities on YouTube listings.
The EduListing YouTube University Ranking's aim is to provide an approximate popularity index of each University in the YouTube social media platform based on the total number of subscribers; it is not intended to rank higher education organisations or their programs, by the quality of education or level of academic services provided.
